We run three calls per year to support funded training activities for staff. Staff can apply as individuals or as a group. Groups can be cross-institutional or involve members of collaborating organisations. Example activities include site visits, day releases, and technical skills training.
This funding prioritises applications led by early career researchers (ECRs) and research technical professionals (RTPs).
Applications can be for up to £5,000.
Applicants must state how the training activity is valuable to their career trajectory and is related to building a greener future.
The call supports domestic and international opportunities.
What will I be asked?
What are the details of the training activity – What is the activity and the learning outcome, when and where will it happen, who will you deliver it?
How will it benefit your career development – what are the anticipated benefits from you taking this training?
How does this training fit with building a greener future – describe how the proposed work aligns with the BBSRC’s definition. If it does not fit within this priority area, highlight which of BBSRC’s other areas it aligns with.
Will you require any flexible working arrangements? Is the training part or full time, and/or do you require any support with caregiving? (Additional funding is available to support caregiving.)
What is the budget breakdown? The budget can be for delivery costs, travel, consumables etc. Contact your institutional team if you are unsure.
You will be asked to upload a short statement of support from your line manager. This ensures they give you permission to take the time to do this training activity.
You may need to discuss the FTMA with your research organisation before you apply. Here are some discussion areas to consider:
- Are you able to take the time away from work to complete this training?
- If it is on-site, where could it be hosted inside your organisation?
- If you intend to apply as group, who else could benefit from joining the training?
- Have you prepared your budget accurately? (For instance, have you included any VAT rates for training delivery fees?)
If there are any aspects of your training ambitions you would like to discuss, please contact the team
